A New Direction: Ethan on Foreign Policy
The last eight years have seen reckless national security policies that have cost trillions of dollars, thousands of American lives, and eroded the world’s trust in this country’s intentions. Worst of all, it has been a foreign policy that has divided Americans. It has turned us against each other at a time when our economy is floundering, when we’re being squeezed at the pump, at grocery stores, and when our veterans are going without proper healthcare. It has divided us when we most need to unify.
The United States can be a world leader able to defend our nation, work with our allies, combat the threat of terrorism, and set high standards of moral conduct. And we can do so in a way that brings us together and makes us proud.
To accomplish this, we need courageous, ethical leadership in Washington, D.C. As Alaska’s voice in Congress, I will work to strengthen our security by bringing our troops home from Iraq, attacking the terrorists in Afghanistan, and rebuilding the international alliances that make America safer and stronger. Our leaders must realize that power and diplomacy must go hand in hand. I agree with New Mexico’s Governor Bill Richardson when he said, “While diplomacy without power is weak, power without diplomacy is blind.”
We have a choice. We can continue to spend billions in Iraq fighting a war without end, a war that with each passing day weakens our security. We can continue to allow our reputation to be tarnished. Or we can come together to put those resources towards growing this country’s economy and fighting those who would do us harm.
Tell me what you think.
