Juneau Leaders Endorse Ethan

June 2nd, 2008

Senator, Representative and Mayor Back Congressional Candidate Berkowitz

Today, Alaska Congressional candidate Ethan Berkowitz received the endorsement of three Juneau leaders: Senator Kim Elton, Representative Beth Kerttula and Mayor Bruce Botelho.

“Ethan brought change in Juneau when we needed it most, and I know he can bring that change to Washington DC,” Senator Elton said.

“I sat next to Ethan in the State House for four years, and throughout those years I was impressed by his commitment to doing the right thing for Alaska. He’s fearless, smart and a great leader. I know Ethan, and I know he’s the new direction Alaska needs,” Representative Kerttula said.

“I have always respected Ethan’s statewide perspective and ability to think long-term for Alaska. He’ll be a strong voice for us in Washington DC,” Mayor Botelho said.

“I am honored to have the support of three Alaskans who have a history of standing up for what’s right and working across the aisle to make change happen,” Berkowitz said. “Like me, they are committed to new direction and new energy for Alaska.”

All three leaders are known and respected statewide for their ability to work across party lines. Sen. Elton was a founding member of the State Senate’s Bipartisan Majority Working Group, which united Democrats and Republicans. Mayor Botelho served as Attorney General for Governors Hickel and Knowles. Rep. Kerttula has led the House Democrats since 2007, forging close working ties with members of both parties.

“Alaskans are best served when our leaders put Alaska’s concerns ahead of partisan and special interests,” Berkowitz said. “I’m running for Congress because Alaskans deserve leaders who represent them first and foremost.”

Senator Kim Elton has represented District B, including the Juneau area, since 1998. Prior to his Senate service, Senator Elton served in the Alaska State House for two terms.

Representative Kerttula succeeded Berkowitz as the Democratic Minority Leader, and has served in the State House for 10 years.

Bruce Botelho has twice served as Mayor of Juneau – from 1988 to 1991 and from 2003 to the present. From 1993 to 2002, he was Attorney General of the State of Alaska, serving both Republican and Democratic governors.

Ethan Berkowitz served in the Alaska State House from 1996-2006, and was the Democratic Leader from 1998-2006.
