Addressing the United Fishermen of Alaska, House Democratic nominee Ethan Berkowitz today introduced his plan to restore accountability and deter reckless conduct for corporations operating in American waters. Said Berkowitz: “This is about restoring higher standards of conduct in business and government. It’s about making sure that Washington is responsible to people, not to special interests. It’s about standing up for the right thing.”

“Exxon has made billions of dollars off our North Slope oil. What we must demand in return is to be treated fairly,” said Ethan Berkowitz, the Democratic candidate for Alaska’s seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Many Alaskans are feeling bitter about the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision Wednesday to slash the amount of punitive damages Exxon Mobil Corp. must pay for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. “Exxon has made billions of dollars off our North Slope oil. What we must demand in return is to be treated fairly,” said Ethan Berkowitz.

Ethan Berkowitz: “It’s a sad day in American history when the highest court in the land allows a corporation to escape its responsibilities after devastating Alaskan lives, lands and waters. This case was about more than legal damages: it was about justice. Congress must act to prevent another disaster like the Exxon Valdez.”
