Could we have a Jewish member of Congress from Alaska? Two weeks before the primary, it’s certainly not out of the question. A poll shows state represenative Ethan Berkowitz is looking pretty good in the race to be the Democratic nominee, and in the general election he is up by 15 points on scandal-plagued Republican incumbent Don Young.

A month before the primary, Alaska Rep. Don Young holds a narrow lead in the Republican nomination battle while former State Rep. Ethan Berkowitz has a big lead on the Democratic side. As Young’s popularity plummets, that’s the best outcome Democrats can hope for, according to general election matchups.

The annual League of Women Voters poll at the fair ended with Democrat Ethan Berkowitz receiving 317 votes, Democrat Diane Benson receiving 245 votes, while Republican Sean Parnell tallied 248 and incumbent Rep. Don Young collected 88.

Alaska will have no fewer than three newbie vs. codger races in the Fall: Barack Obama vs. John McCain for President, Mark Begich vs. Ted Stevens for senator and Ethan Berkowitz vs. Don Young for the House. These races will reinforce each other and in a year where 80% of the voters think the country is heading in the wrong direction, change could hit Alaska big time.
