New Energy, A New Direction, and A Renewal of Purpose

    June 3rd, 2008

    Dear Friends,

It’s time for new energy, a new direction, and a renewal of purpose.

That was my message at the Alaska Democratic Party Convention, where I had an opportunity to talk with many passionate, dedicated Democrats and address the convention, which you can watch here.

We can win this race, and the foot-stomping, table-pounding reception I received from the crowd gathered in Raven Hall tells me that Alaska Democrats agree. That’s the kind of enthusiasm that’ll make a difference in November.

Following the convention, I traveled to the Kodiak Crab Festival. I stayed very busy while in Kodiak, seeing old friends, watching the Frog Jumping Contest, checking out the mask exhibit at the Alutiiq Museum, and eating pancakes at the Elks’ Club and dinner at the Community Multicultural Gathering. No wonder they call Kodiak “Island terrific in the North Pacific.” I’m looking forward to going back!

Back in Anchorage, I attended an event with Alaska Veterans. Alaska has the largest per capita veterans’ population of any state in the Union, but our veterans’ services and facilities are underfunded and not measuring up to the need.

I fought hard in the state legislature to help Alaska’s veterans and their families get adequate and accessible health care, and I’ll keep working in Washington to make sure that our veterans receive the treatment they need and the benefits they have earned.

I’ve heard it over and over again, all across the state. This is a time for a new direction. It’s time for a new kind of politics about vision and values, about what we’re for, not just who we’re against.

But I’ll need your help to get there.

Give me the chance to serve you in Washington, and I’ll always listen, I’ll always remember why I’m doing the job, and I’ll never forget who I represent.

    Warm regards,
