Congratulations SWAMC on 20 Years
February 2nd, 2008
To all Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference Members
It was a pleasure to join you at SWAMC’s 20th Annual Conference. The anniversary brings back memories of my experiences with the region:
- As a young attorney, confronted time and again with an inadequate justice system.
- As a deckhand for three seasons discovering three ways to lose money in Bristol Bay (no fish, no processors, and no price).
- As a carefree bachelor roped into a brief stint herding reindeer on Umnak Island.
- As a legislator fighting for full funding for schools and appropriations to build and maintain ports and harbors.
- And as a businessman trying to bring low-cost renewable energy projects to villages across rural Alaska.
It is an exciting time to be an Alaskan. Working together we can make our communities self-sufficient, safer and healthier. Twenty years from now, by making the most of today’s opportunities, we’ll have a lot to be proud of.
Warm Regards,
