Ethan Berkowitz leads in new DailyKos poll

December 11th, 2007

Berkowitz 49 — Young 42

Big news from the national political blog Daily Kos. They commissioned a poll and released its results on December 10: Ethan Berkowitz has a strong seven point lead over Don Young. Check out the results yourself here.

The numbers reveal a clear message: Alaskans are ready for a new direction.

A word of caution — even though the poll results are very positive, there’s a long way to go between today and the election. A lot can happen, and a lot will happen. There are times when the high road gets bumpy. Even though political sniping has already begun, this campaign remains committed to elevating the quality and tone of debate – the way we run for office says a lot about how we’ll govern, and is part of how we restore faith and confidence in our democracy.

That said, these poll numbers are exciting. This is a competitive race, and we can win it. But I need your help to win – we’re taking on a well-funded opponent.

I’m confident we can sweep Don Young out of office. Now we need the money for a good broom. We have an important fundraising deadline coming up at the end of the year. Will you help us by making a contribution of $50, $100, $150 or more today?

We’re aiming to raise $15,000 by the end of December. Just click on the broom to help me clean up the House. Thank you for taking the time to contribute.

Warm regards,

Some of what Ethan’s been up to:

“We The People” Keynote Address
Ethan was the keynote speaker at “We the People” — a competition for high school students from all over Alaska. More than 250 students, advisors and judges gathered in Anchorage to debate constitutional issues. Responding to a wide range of questions, Ethan encouraged the audience to “be informed, be involved, and use your power to make a difference.” He called on students to remember that adherence to our country’s values is essential to maintaining the nation’s strength, security and integrity.

Bartlett Democratic Club Presentation
Ethan addressed a friendly crowd at the monthly lunch meeting of the Bartlett Democratic Club. He answered questions about everything from educational policy to trade issues to Iraq, to stem-cell research and health care. Even though he chewed on all those topics (and more), he never actually had time to eat!

Challenged Sinopec’s Gasline Bid
Pointing to Sinopec ZPEB’s involvement with the government of Sudan, which is perpetrating atrocities in Darfur, Ethan argued that the company is an unsuitable partner to develop Alaska’s gas. Click here to see his statement.

NAACP Annual Dinner
Ethan and Mara sat at Rex & Stephanie Butler’s table and had spirited discussions about everything from families and kid care to after-school sports, juvenile delinquency and homelessness with other attendees.

Palmer Rotary Club
Drawing on his legislative and business experience, Ethan made a presentation to Palmer Rotarians explaining how renewable energy development in Alaska is a way to generate economic opportunity while making Alaska more self-reliant.
